A litigation attorney is a lawyer that provides representation to individuals involved in lawsuits of different types. Many litigation attorneys focus on specific areas of the law, like personal injury, medical or professional malpractice, or business law matters.
Oftentimes, a person decides to become a litigator while still in law school. As a result, that individual will take a set of courses while a law student that include evidence, civil procedure, and courtroom practice. A future litigator is also likely to participate in a law school’s moot court and law clinic programs. A law clinic gives a student the chance to represent actual clients while still in school. This provides solid firsthand experience to a budding litigator.
Litigation attorneys practice in a variety of different settings. These include private law firms, corporations, organizations, and governmental agencies. When it comes to law firms, there are firms that maintain specialized litigation departments. There are also smaller law firms that focus only on providing clients with litigation services.
